Reflecting March ’14

I’m sitting here reflecting on how it’s so important to cherish every moment that you have to spend with family and to do the same thing with the experiences that you have musically.
Times and “Seasons” change in the music business. One minute you’re playing in this band and the next year another. I’ve been fortunate enough to play and be around so many great musicians and people.
Sometimes you don’t realize how special some moments are until you look back. For me it was being around and playing with Wayne Shorter while at the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (2005-2007) . We did some concerts in India and Vietnam. He was an arms distant from me when we played those concerts but I went to his show at the Kennedy Center and I didn’t even want to try to get thru all the security backstage …. lol . That was Wayne Shorter ! Who knows if I’ll be able to play with him again. That experience had an incredible impact on my writing and musicianship.
It’s for a divine purpose when ever God/The Universe brings a set group of people together for a time to play music and be around each other. Your musicianship, hunger for learning and musical influences will bring you around people that think like you. Thats just how the world works. I learn so much from the people that I play with as well as my students.
The most important thing to do is to keep playing, practicing, writing music and work on your humanity because those are the things that bring these opportunities. No matter what you’re talent is .. just stick with it and reach out to people that are doing what you are doing.
I’ve had a great career with so many awesome experiences so far . I look forward to meeting and playing music with so many new people.
Life truly a journey. I’m enjoying the ride.

Many Blessings to Everyone !

Inspiring week of Music in New York (March ’14)

I’m spending this morning recovering from an incredible week of music in NY.
Started of with The Baylor Project at Smoke . I had a blast playing with Marcus and Jean. Many laughs, great vibes and uplifting music. I’m a fan of their music so to play with them was an extra blessing .
Then I played a Smalls with my group . It was one of the best shows that I’ve ever had . Thanks to Allyn , Corey, Gilad and Matt for putting so my spirit and energy into the music. I’m still riding on that wave . Aaron Parks came through and sat-in on Humpty Dumpty . John Raymond played “Peace” with us.
I can’t wait for ya’ll to hear this music . I’ll post some clips from Smalls this week.
Thanks to everyone who follows me on this page for your support !

October 21, 2012 Darin Atwater 4tet at Douglass Memorial Church

Musicality, Class, Spirituality, Blues, Swing, Inspiration and Virtuosity are a few words that come to mind after performing with the Darin Atwater 4tet at Douglass Memorial Church. The presentation of all the styles of music from classical, jazz, gospel and blues were presented with excellence. For myself, this concert was a true eye opener and was indeed a performance that made me sit back and think about the true purpose and intent for music. There was a special spiritual overtone through out the whole concert. I attribute this feeling to the fact that we were playing music for the first reason it was put on earth which was to worship God. It was like a homecoming for all these deferent styles of music that are played in deferent venues besides the church in which it was created for in the beginning. Playing on this concert was a true blessing as I had the chance to play in the pulpit without limitations. I felt like a minister delivering a sermon through music. As a Christian I believe that we were all first created to give God praise and this concert really helped to renew my mind with this concept. We all played for God that night and in return he blessed the audience members and us. Having such a great leader and musical genius like Darin Atwater at the forefront, who can present the music and communicate the history while linking it all back to the church, is exactly what is needed in order for these styles to be well received in church. This was a night where it all came together and I look forward to more experiences like this one.

Inspring week with Mulgrew Miller and Wingspan at Dizzy’s December 2011

What an inspiring week of music ! Not only I’m I really excited about having the opportunity to play with Mulgrew Miller and Wingspan but to hear everyone in the band tearing it up just added an extra bonus for me . I’m grateful and I always learn alot from this experiences . After playing the music for about 6 days straight, on the last set of the evening the music and band just got to a magical level .
Mulgrew Miller – Piano , Rodney Green – Drums , Steve Nelson – Vibes , Ivan Taylor – Bass , Daune Eubanks – Trumpet . Yours truly – Soprano / Alto – Sax.
Honor and Blessed to be apart of this group for the week .

Japan w/ Christian Mcbride and Inside Straight October 2011

I’ve had the pleasure of going to Japan for a 2nd time with Christian McBride and Inside Straight this past week . The Band included myself – Alto and Soprano Sax , Christian McBride – Bass , Warren Wolf – Vibes , Christian Sands – Piano and Ulysses Owens on drums .

We really had a great time . The performances were swinging and full of allot of energy not to mention having a chance the hear Christian McBride play so much amazing stuff on bass every night as well as everyone else in the band just tearing it up . I thought about something while I was there . While having a conversation with a friend of mine about how I never got a chance to play with Art Blakey , Freddie Hubbard or just allot of the legends ….. then I realized that I’m actually getting that experience by playing with people like Christian , Mulgrew , Carl Allen . Larry Willis and all these legends that I get to play with . Anytime I’m playing in these situations i’ll learn something about Life and of course music . After this trip I found out that Christian was really into allot of the Milt Jackson and Ray Brown records so I downloaded allot of that music for my long 13 hour trip back to the states .
Speaking about listening ! I listened to a CD by Becca Stevens entitled ” Weightless” on my way to Japan and that Cd is really amazing . I love the way she sings these beautiful melodies through all of these different time signatures . The grooves , melodies , vibe , tunes and production on this Album is incredible . Go buy this album if you are in to great singing and musicality .

Best,
Tim
